i have the old dodgy tiptronic gerabox syndrome. cheers audi!!

pretty sure its the signal its recieving from the ecu so thats where im going to start, went to audi Leicester in an attempt to source a part number/price for a new one....

but the bloke was an idiot, told me there were different types, some of them are for 6 plate and some of them for 7 plate, dont know why though!! i told him seven plate was the attempt at a fix for the common problem with the gearboxes which should be recalled. he didnt know anything about that either surprisingly!!

but he could tell me it would be around £933 for a new ecu, depending on the exact one i needed. i would have to take it off to get the part number from it.

which brings me to the end of my rant Laughing and to ask my question, where the bloody hell is the gearbox ecu on a 2002 1.9 tdi a6 (c5). ive had a look under the drivers seat carpet, nothing there. i had a look under the passenger seat carpet, comfort module was there, but no gearbox ecu.

is it on the sodding gearbox instead?? and if so does any one know the exact location? 01j gearbox.

cheers in advance for any replies. jim

hmmm
I'm not 100% certain on this but up behind the glovebox to the left hand side against the bulkhead, almost in the corner
That's where they were in the C4's

well to answer my own question the 01j mutlitronic gearbox ecu is located in the gearbox itself.

to remove the 01j multitronic gearbox ecu you need to remove the gearbox undertray, drop the atf (16mm triple square hex, security type, laser do this at around £6).

you will then need a 100mm t45 torx bit 3/8" drive preferably for ease of access and a 150mm t45 torx bit drive, and angle adjusting adapter along with a wrench and a couple of short extension bars.

remove the screws from the back end of the gearbox (end plate up in exhaust tunnel) and the 13mm nut/bolts bracket for the handbrake cable. drop the end plate off and away from the car.

once taken off you can then see the back side of the ecu and read the part number after a quick wipe. it is held in by three t30 torx bolts - one on the left and two on the right hand side. the ecu will then just ease out the back of the gearbox. be gentle with it they are expensive.

think its the g194 and g193 sensors that are duff on mine, i dropped it off for testing today. fingers crossed it comes back fixed.

your supposed to use a vas 5162 vw tool to refill the box with cvt atf, but vw being helpful as ever wont sell you one. so i plan on making my own up as its only a way of using gravity to feed the atf into the box.

i can do a proper write up with pics and tooling if there would be any interest....doesnt seem like an overly technical forum so i wont be taking any responsability for anyones balls ups though!!

cheers jim

Thread is quite old now i know but did you have to drop the box down a little to get to the top bolts on the rear housing? i have to do the same job, also how did you get on with refilling the box and what fluid did you use?

Cheers.
